The Cholesterol Lie, and What It Did to Women
By Lara Brown · 2025-12-05
We need to talk about cholesterol. Not because the science is murky, but because the marketing was so successful that two generations of women now flinch at the word.
Here is what your biology actually thinks of cholesterol. It is the raw material from which every sex hormone is built. Pregnenolone, progesterone, testosterone, oestrogen, cortisol, DHEA, all of them are made from cholesterol. Your brain is roughly 25% cholesterol by dry weight. Every single cell membrane in your body needs it. Your gut needs it to make bile, your skin needs it to make vitamin D, your nervous system needs it to insulate neurons.
When you eat a low-fat diet, when you swap real butter for seed-oil spreads, when you skim the cream and eat the egg white without the yolk, you are not making yourself healthier. You are starving your hormones of their substrate. You cannot make progesterone without cholesterol. You cannot make a healthy luteal phase without progesterone. You cannot ovulate well without a healthy luteal phase. The cascade is real.
The low-fat era was built on weak science, well-marketed. The Seven Countries Study, the original sin of nutritional dogma, cherry-picked countries to fit a hypothesis. The food industry then made an enormous amount of money manufacturing low-fat versions of foods that were never meant to be low fat, sweetening them to taste of anything at all.
And women paid for it. Low-fat dairy, low-fat yoghurt, margarine, vegetable oils, all of it stripped of the very nutrients we needed. We were sold thinness and we lost our hormones in the process.
The good news is that real food is still here. Real butter from grass-fed cows. Pastured egg yolks. Olive oil and avocado. Wild salmon. Lamb and beef. Full-fat dairy if you tolerate it. Cholesterol is not the villain. It is the building block. And your hormones, your skin, your brain, your bones, are waiting for it.
