PCOS Is Now PMOS, and the Name Change Matters

For half a century, women with hormonal acne, missing periods, weight changes and unwanted hair growth have been handed the same label: PCOS. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. A name that pointed at the ovaries, blamed the ovaries, and ignored everything else.

The trouble is, the cysts are not really cysts. They are immature follicles, follicles that never finished their journey to ovulation. And in many women diagnosed with 'PCOS', they are not even there.

In 2024, an international consensus of researchers began the formal move to a new name: PMOS, Polycystic Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. It is a small change in letters and an enormous change in meaning. The new name says, out loud, what functional practitioners have been saying for years. This is a metabolic condition. It is not an ovary problem. It is a whole-body, whole-system, whole-life problem that shows up at the ovaries.

That matters because metabolic conditions can be treated. They can be reversed. Blood sugar can be retrained. Inflammation can be calmed. Stress can be metabolised. Sleep can be repaired. And as those upstream signals shift, the ovaries, quietly, faithfully, start ovulating again.

It also matters because women with PMOS carry real, measurable, long-term risk. Increased cardiovascular disease, even in lean women. Higher rates of type 2 diabetes. Emerging links with cognitive decline and Alzheimer's. None of that is solved by handing a 16 year old the pill and telling her to come back at 30 if she wants a baby.

If you have been told you have PCOS, you have not been told the whole story. The new name is a beginning, not an ending. Your symptoms are a metabolic signal. And that signal can be answered.
